the
only state to see a significant drop in the number of people without health insurance. The Fiscal Policy Institute found New York's uninsured fell from 16.3 percent in 2000 to 13.5 percent in 2005.

We will tear down the apparatus of terror and we will help you to build a new Iraq that is prosperous and free. In a free Iraq, there will be no more wars of aggression against your neighbors, no more poison factories, no more executions of dissidents, no more torture chambers and rape rooms. The tyrant will soon be gone. The day of your liberation is near. - George W. Bush
Torture bill passes. Now we're

Berlin opera canceled after religious threats . What kind of world do we live in where people are afraid to criticize religion? Ugly systems of laughable
fictions, delusions, and nonsensical customs, which are created by humans, and are therefore open to ridicule and artistic morphing are suddenly immune because of some fanatics? These
are not inherent qualities like physical makeup or genetics, which should in fact be immune from criticism (but not art).
They're
human created, like governments, works of art, and vials of crack, and are therefore completely and totally open to criticism and artistic reuse. Outrageous.

Congress: Democracy Crumbles Under Cover of Darkness
"I watched them surround Cincinnati's Steve Chabot, trying first a carrot, then a stick; but he remained defiant.
Next, they aimed at retiring Michigan congressman Nick Smith, whose son is running to succeed him. They promised support if he
changed his vote to yes and threatened his son's future if he refused. He stood his ground.
Many of the two dozen Republicans who voted against the bill had fled the floor. One Republican hid in the Democratic cloakroom.
By 4:30, the browbeating had moved into the Republican cloakroom, out of sight of C-SPAN cameras and the
insomniac public. Republican leaders woke President George W. Bush, and a White House aide passed a cell phone from one
recalcitrant member to another in the cloakroom.
At 5:55, two hours and 55 minutes after the roll call had begun - twice as long as any previous vote in the history of
the U.S. House of Representatives - two obscure western Republicans emerged from the cloakroom. They walked, ashen and
cowed, down the aisle to the front of the chamber, scrawled their names and district numbers on green cards to change
their votes and surrendered the cards to the clerk.
The speaker gaveled the vote closed; Medicare privatization had passed.
You can do a lot in the middle of the night, under the cover of darkness."

21 September 06 - 15:45Torture in Iraq now worse than under Saddam
The
BBC reports 'Manfred Nowak said the situation in Iraq was "out of control", with abuses being committed by security forces, militia groups and anti-US insurgents.'
"The UN report says detainees' bodies often show signs of beating using electrical cables, wounds in heads and genitals, broken legs and hands, electric and cigarette burns."
'It concludes that torture threatens "the very fabric of the country" as victims exact their own revenge and fuel further violence.'
Mission accomplished, eh?

Eweek talks about how "Using clues obtained from a YouTube video and a simple four-word Google search engine query, a criminal can find step-by-step instructions for how to hack into and take control of thousands of ATMs scattered around the United States."
"If you get your hand on this manual, you can basically reconfigure the ATM if the default password was not changed. My guess is that most of these mini-bank terminals are sitting around with
default passwords untouched" Goldsmith said. Hilarious.

Finally, after over a decade of limp, useless, Republican control, it looks like we'll be getting
Spitzer as governor of NY.
Pataki has been worthless for three terms. We can't get rid of him fast enough. Spitzer isn't ultra progressive,
but he's pretty good overall. Next we just need to get someone like him in the Mayor's office, instead of
"Mr. Guiliani Lite" Bloomberg.

Rudy Giuliani spent a lot of time attempting to dismantle nightlife in NYC, and did a pretty good job
of it in many places. His policies wiped out several good club nights and made plenty of club owners
and promoters very nervous about doing business. The overly restrictive noise policies and of course the classic
"Cabaret Laws" enforcement (how such blatantly unfair laws are still on the books is beyond comprehension).
He hurt scenesters in the Drag, LGBT, Goth, Industrial, and Indie scenes especially since they were typically
just skating by in terms of numbers. His policies were the final nail in the coffin for many of those nights.
Oh, the hypocrisy of
Rudy Giuliani.

Like most mammals, I too need water to survive. However, not being a fan of
plain water, I tend to drink
Vitamin Water from Glaceau(especially Energy). I tried
Life Water and that fruit water stuff (also from Glaceau) but
both were pretty gross. I don't drink regular soda either, as it does horrible things to my insides. Juice
is another story, so lately I've been sampling the lightly carbonated
Izze and
Fizzy Lizzy filtered-water juice drinks. They're anywhere from 50% juice up to
70% or so, have no added sugar, caffeine, or crack, and they're super tasty. Yum.

New federal guidelines issued this year ask any woman capable of conceiving to treat themselves - and to be treated by their health-care provider - as "pre-pregnant" at all times. Women between their first menstrual period and the menopause are told to take folic acid supplements, stop smoking, stop drinking regularly, maintain a healthy weight and keep chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes under control; not primarily for their own health but to protect any baby that they may or may not be planning to have.
