05 July 09 - 10:42Debt jubilee may be the only answer

Debt jubilee may be the only answer. Painful idea, but if it works, it works. If this does come to pass, those who put a plan like this into action would do well to remember who it hurts as well as who and what it helps. It may be hard for some to believe that in the US, there are people who do not have, and have never had, much (or any) debt. I've received looks and comments of shock when asked about my debts:

Car payments? No car. I take public transportation.

House/mortgage payments? I rent an apartment.

Credit card(s)? I had one for a couple of years to build up a credit rating, then canceled it. Always pay in full.

Student loans? Paid as much as I could as soon as I could. Paid it off a decade ago.

A policy like this basically says "you should have taken on as much debt as you could have possibly gotten. Oh you didn't? Uhh, good for you!" What reward was there for avoiding debt and being responsible? Nothing. Those of us who have avoided debt will be punished.
